Charnos - National Stockings Day, For Breast Cancer Care's Pink Day

Charnos have declared October 20th to be National Stockings Day. Apparently some girls between the ages of 20-25 have never worn stockings - unbelievable! - which may explain why some guys have never seen the seductive sight of a stocking top. How wrong is that! Stockings were probably at their fashionable height between the thirties and the late nineteen-fifties when they were derigeur for any Hollywood actress of fashion Diva. Sadly they have fallen into the shadows of the fashion scene with the advent of the jean culture and a more casual appearance.

The fun, awareness event can both reinvigorate the hosiery industry and more importantly give support to Breast Cancer Care (BCC). The work of this charity, among others in the field, is vital for the continued development of better screening techniques and improved treatments. The inspirational event will encourage women who have never worn stockings to try this most elegant and sexy form of apparel. Why not try a suspender belt too and create the knockout effect...

Incidentally, you have to admire those gorgeous girls at the Buckinghamshire-based ad agency, Nobull communications. These plucky girls have given it their all at a celebrity photo shoot with '10 Years Younger' Nicky Hambleton Jones for client Charnos. Charnos has created pink ribbon lace top stockings and hold-ups, modelled here by Vicky, Kally, Nicki and Jo (above L-R).

The Sun newspaper has also joined the fight to protect our stockings with the 'Time to save our stockings feature, don't let the side down - show these guys what sexy really means...

The fun event has a very important message for women but will also help raise awareness among men about the prevalence and seriousness of this horrible cancer which affects many women worldwide.

Breast Cancer - What are the Signs

Breast Cancer in women is second only to lung cancer deaths and a woman in the United States has a 1 in 8 chance of having breast cancer in her lifetime. That's a startling 13 percent chance that any woman in the U.S. will get breast cancer during her life.

Breast Examination is vital to a woman's health and personal care. There are a number of things you should be aware of when doing a self-examination; obviously any lump or change in the shape of your breast is reason to have further testing performed. If the breast develops dimpling or the nipple area begins to invert itself, or lumps in the underarm area are also symptoms to have checked by your physician.

Most importantly, it is imperative you know that there really are no definite signs of breast cancer, so get tested regularly!

Having a mammogram is not the most comfortable test to have performed, but the opportunity to live a long and healthy life by getting early detection is worth the short-term discomfort. Recently, there have been new breast examination techniques made available whereby the mammogram procedure may be avoided. The age of medicine is always improving and progressing in our abilities to learn more with less personal invasion. This is even more of a reason not to make excuses not to be checked regularly.

As a woman ages her chances of contracting breast cancer increases dramatically. At age 30 the chances are 1 in 2212, and by age 40, the odds greatly increase to 1 in 235. By age 60, the odds are 1 in 23, so if nothing else prompts you to perform constant monthly self-examinations and yearly office exams with your doctor.

Breast cancer respects no one, and there is no assurance that if your family genealogy does not have a history of breast cancer, you won't contract breast cancer. Don't find reasons not to find out about your current health stats. The procedures are covered under wellness provisions in most insurance policies, so again, get tested regularly.

In our age of breast enlargement and plastic surgery, breast cancer examinations at home may be more difficult to detect changes in the breast, so if you have breast implants, please have yourself check with your doctor on a regimented schedule. It's better to protect your investment for the long term if for no other reason. Hopefully you are not the assuming type, whereby you don't feel pain or observe any changes therefore all is well. Breast cancer does not necessarily show any symptoms, but the office tests rarely miss any stages of breast cancer. Should your doctor find any cancer, the earlier the better and with minimal physical changes in your appearance. Just be safe and not sorry for assuming all is okay.

Breast Cancer Symptoms

Whenever breast cancer first develops, there could be no symptoms, and sometimes the only detectable signs come when the cancer has grown to an uncontrollable size.

Difficulty

A method to determine if a person has breast cancer is to check for lumps. It can be difficult to verify if a lump is due to breast cancer, because a woman breast tends to feel lumpy and tender before she undergoes her monthly menstrual cycle. Experiencing pain in the breast does not necessarily mean that a person has breast cancer as well. Benign cancer cells may cause pain, but they are not life threatening. The best way to determine if there is a condition is to consult a doctor.

Warnings

Signs to look for personal protection from breast cancer are: if there is a sudden change in sensation in the nipple; check for the tenderness of the nipple; if there is a sudden change in the appearance of the breast or the nipple; if the nipple turned inward into the breast; if you notice a lump on the breast or in the underarm area; if the skin on the breast, areola or nipple becomes red, scaly and swollen, and may appear to look like an orange peel; or if there are fluid discharges or bleeding in the nipple.

Lumps

This is usually the first sign if a person has breast cancer. Whether it is a male or a female patient, he may experience a lump in the breast if he acquires the disease.

Having a lump is not a guarantee that a person does have cancer. 9 out of 10 patients who find lumps in their breast found out that these were benign cells, meaning they are non-lethal cancer cells. Even if the person has inverted nipples, blood stains or fluid discharge from the nipple or rashes, this can all mean other things. The best way to verify the existence of the condition is to seek professional medical opinion.

Pink Littmann Stethoscope - Why Color Preferences Mean a Lot

The Pink Littmann Stethoscope and Breast Cancer Awareness work hand in hand right now. Choose this popular color when buying your stethoscope to make a stand that no matter how difficult it is to get through cancer, the medical industry is working round the clock to come up with the best medications to win the battle.

This stethoscope's color is widely preferred by female physicians and nurses across the board. It speaks so much of their femininity in spite being in a man's world. You too can wear such subtlety when you go about your work or use it at home to check on your blood pressure. The Pink Littmann Stethoscope is one of the instruments that do not have to cost that much unlike the other kinds of stethoscopes offered.

An amazing fact is that even male doctors choose the color pink for their stethoscopes. Usually they are pediatricians who converse and are around little children. This will take away the fear in most children as they will just stare at the soothing color instead of breaking out in tantrums. Aside from the nice color, did you know that the Pink Littmann Stethoscope is one instrument that is pressure sensitive? It can detect sounds which are too faint to hear with a regular stethoscope. This comes in very handy for the tantrums alright since doctors and nurses can easily listen to the heartbeat and lung conditions of any crying child.

With regards to Breast Cancer Awareness, patients who recently went out of surgery are still wrapped with thick layers of bandage around their chest. Using this kind of stethoscope allows the sound waves to penetrate the layers of fabric and signal the doctor that their patient is doing well.

Now the colors of stethoscopes do not have to stop for fashion sense any longer. There is actually a reason behind the color as well as the urgency to purchase one. Pink is considered to be soft but wait till you find out that it is shatter resistant. High hopes for such a color to make every beat matter very much.

An International Symbol For Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most critical cancer risk facing women in America now. By means of the pink ribbon as their symbol numerous organizations both in the United States and out of the country are battling to inform both women and men concerning this disease as well as promote research and development both for treatment of breast cancer and at some point the comprehensive eradication of the disease.

The pink ribbon deemed world wide to be an international symbol for breast cancer. The pink ribbon is ever-present, or seeming to be present far and wide at once, and be ubiquitous. No one company or organization or foundation has the rights to this worldwide symbol. But, individual pink ribbon designers could hold all rights reserved on their copyright, such as Avon has its own, as does Estee Lauder.

In the early 1970s the song Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Ole Oak Tree was released, based on this song a wife of a hostage in Iran, Penney Laingen, was the first who employed the ribbon as an awareness symbol. She attached yellow ribbons around the trees, to exemplify the aspiration of her husband coming home. Her friends and family members followed the style because of loyalty. Seeing that all Americans were able to perceive this message, the "ribbon became a medium".

The pink ribbon for breast cancer has been the symbol for awareness of it and support for well over a decade. The derivations of the pink ribbon for breast cancer date back to the early 1990's, when ribbons were fast becoming well-liked means to encourage awareness of different causes.

Breast cancer is an exceptionally personal disease as the breasts are a physically powerful organ of femininity and what makes a woman a woman. Selecting such a color that is a bright, healthy symbol of women was perceived as a positive and outstanding method to raise awareness of breast cancer as well as support funding of research to battle this disease.

Support Breast Cancer With Pink Binoculars

As you are no doubt aware, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. People are involved in all kinds of activities to raise awareness of this horrible disease. Many others get involved with money-raising activities such as walks, runs, or other organized events. But did you know you could support breast cancer awareness just by buying a pair of binoculars?

A lot of companies sometimes change their product packaging to support certain diseases or causes. They might just make it a certain color, or put a special graphic on it. When people buy those products, the company then donates a portion of the profits to that cause. This method of charity support is good for everyone involved.

Obviously, the charity gets a donation, so that's a positive thing for them. The company looks good for helping a charity, and possibly gains new customers from it. And the people who buy the products can help support a charity without spending any more money than they would have anyway. It's a win-win-win.

Usually, you see this done with everyday, common products you might find in the grocery store. But every once in a while, a company will take part with an uncommon product. That's what Alpen did. Alpen binoculars have only been around since 1997, but they've built a good reputation. When a family member of an Alpen employee, and then an Alpen employee herself were struck with breast cancer, the company decided to show its support with products.

They came out with two models of binoculars, both pink. Every time one of those pink binoculars is sold, a portion of the proceeds goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. They're still regular binoculars inside, and they work just as well as any other model. The only difference is that they're pink on the outside.

These binoculars would make a great gift for any woman, or anyone who wants to show their support for breast cancer awareness. If pink's not your color, the company makes plenty of regular binoculars, too.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

It is important that women are aware of how their breasts feel normally, so they will notice any breast cancer symptoms at an early stage, when treatment often has a better outcome. Men, too, should be on the alert for any changes in their breast tissue. Breast cancer can be present for years without causing any symptoms. The first sign that something is wrong for most women is when they find a lump in the breast or the nearby armpit.

The breast cancer symptoms could be any of the following -

  • A lump or thickening in or near the breast - Not all lumps in or near the breast are due to breast cancer. Some of the lumps may be due to hormonal changes. If the lumps persist, then evaluation should be done to rule out cancer of the breast. Lump in the breast is the commonest breast cancer symptom.

  • A lump or swelling under the arm - A lump or swelling in the armpit indicates enlargement of lymph node which is an important symptom of cancer of the breast. Lymph node enlargement could be due to many reasons including cancer. Persistent lump needs evaluation.

  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast, especially those caused by arm movements or by lifting the breasts - These changes indicate that the breast tissue is enlarged. These may be normal due to hormonal changes. If they are due to hormonal changes, they will be cyclical. If the size does not fluctuate and if it keeps increasing in size and changing in shape, then breast cancer has to be ruled out.

  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin of the breast - Dimpling or puckering of skin is due to involvement of the skin by the cancer tissue. The external appearance would be like the skin of an orange (peau d'orange).

  • Changes in the look or feel of the skin of the breast, the nipple or the area around the nipple

  • Bleeding or discharge from the nipple - Bleeding from the nipple is always abnormal and has to be investigated adequately to rule out breast cancer. Bleeding is an important symptom. Discharge other than blood from the nipple may or may not be normal. If the discharge is from one breast only, if it is a new discharge, then it is not normal and have to be investigated.

  • The nipple turns in and becomes inverted or points differently

  • Discomfort or pain in the breast, particularly if new and persistent - Pain in the breast may occur due to hormonal changes during menstrual cycle. It occurs in both the breasts and it is normal. If the pain does not follow the menstrual cycle and if it is new or persistent or occurs in one breast only, it is considered abnormal. Breast pain is one of the important symptoms that should not be ignored.

Breast Cancer - Symptoms and Treatment

Breast cancer is a topic of global interest because it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Despite the mortality rate, it is one of the curable cancers only if women go for treatment upon discovering the early signs of breast cancer.

Detection

Breast cancer is an abnormal growth of cells in the breast tissue. Any breast lump that is hard is suspicious. Detecting breast cancer symptoms is quite easy but most women delay seeking medical screening. The recommendations for screening are as follows:

  • Age 20 onward: Self-breast examination every month, and is best done on the fifth day after menstruation

  • Women below 40: Clinical breast examination by a medical specialist every three years

  • Women above 40: Clinical breast examination and mammogram every year

  • Women with a higher risk profile: More aggressive screening procedure

Medical Screening

The commonly used screening procedure is mammography which is an imaging technique that employs serial X-rays to visualize breast tissues and detect masses not felt during a self-breast examination. This screening procedure is not perfect as it may fail to show some tumors or may show an abnormality in a normal breast.

When a lump is found, a biopsy is done to check for the dreaded cancer.

Treatments

Chemotherapy and radiation remain the standard breast cancer treatments. There are other newer treatment methods which are still undergoing clinical trails.

Targeted Biological Therapy is the treatment targeting specific characteristics of cancer cells. This method, when compared to chemotherapy, is less likely to harm normal healthy cells.

Hormone Therapy, also known as anti-oestrogen therapy, retards the ability of oestrogen to stimulate the growth of the cancer cells.

Anti-Angiogenic Medications are drugs which kill the cancer cells by cutting-off blood supply to them (cancer cells).

Breast cancer is curable if it is detected and treated at its early stage or upon discovering symptoms.

Nutrition Tips and More to Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer

September is a special month, not only for all of the fall lovers out there, but for those women who have suffered, are suffering, or know someone who is suffering from breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an entire month designated for the annual campaign to raise awareness for a disease that has taken the lives of so many women all over the world. Breast cancer should be a concern to every woman, not just those who have a family history of the disease. It is important to be knowledgeable about the risk factors. Early detection and preventative measures are key to keeping yourself breast cancer free.

Risk Factors

-Personal history of breast cancer

-Family history of breast cancer (first degree relative-mother, sister, daughter)

-Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy

-Dense breasts

-Alcohol consumption

-Obesity

Factors that Lower Risk

-Onset of menstrual period at an older age

-Early menopause

-Giving birth to your first child at a younger age, breastfeeding your children, or having several births

-Healthy weight

-Regular exercise

Warning Signs and Symptoms

It is important to be aware of any changes in your breasts. Identifying a symptom of breast cancer does not mean you have cancer, but is reason to visit your healthcare professional for an examination. Regularly performing self-examinations will help you identify abnormalities that occur. In addition to self-examinations, be sure to get regular screenings performed by a doctor. Symptoms to look out for on the surface of the breast and nipple include dimpling, scaling, swelling, or redness. Around the nipple, check for tenderness, a nipple that is inverted or turning inward, and discharge which is either clear or bloody. Observe changes in breast size or shape such as swelling, shrinking, or abnormal asymmetry. Remember that it is not uncommon for your breasts to differ slightly in size, but if it is a recent change an examination is recommended. Abnormalities such as hardened lumps under the surface of your breast, nipple, or underarm area may also be felt. While lumps are not always cancerous, they should always be examined professionally.

Nutrition Tips to Lower Your Risk

The National Cancer Institute suggests the following guidelines for cancer prevention:

-Increase intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods contain a variety of phytochemicals and antioxidants which have proven benefits for disease prevention by blocking the oxidation of free radicals in the body that cause damage to cells, including damage that may lead to cancer. Foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green tea, citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables all contain these cancer fighting nutrients.

-Decrease fat intake to less than 30% of calories. There have been some studies that suggest that the type of fat you eat may influence the development of breast cancer, but this remains a controversial topic. Therefore, it is still recommended that you choose healthier, monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids from fish, which have been linked to inhibit the growth of breast tumors. Limit your intake of the less healthy saturated and trans fats. These types of fats are found in red meat, cheeses, ice cream, butter and processed baked goods, crackers and margarines.

-Minimize intake of cured, pickled and smoked foods.

-Achieve a healthy body weight. Obese women have a higher risk for developing breast cancer. Following the above guidelines to incorporate more fruit, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats into your diet is the best way to not only improve your health but lose weight.

-Increase physical activity. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests increasing physical activity by as little as 1-2 hours per week can lower your breast cancer risk by 18%. Becoming more physically active is also a way to achieve a healthy body weight and improve insulin sensitivity of your cells (high insulin levels have been linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer).

-Drink alcohol in moderation. According to the American Cancer Society, drinking alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. As a precaution women are advised to limit alcohol consumption to no more than 1 drink per day, or even less if you can.

Unfortunately, breast cancer is a disease that is highly associated with risk factors you cannot control and the truth is there is conflicting evidence regarding the association between diet and breast cancer risk. Though the relationship is unclear, eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet is the best thing you can do. Including a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats and maintaining an active lifestyle is the best measure you can take not only in breast cancer prevention, but in the prevention of all diseases.

Breast Cancer Mammogram - Prevent The Deadly Diagnosis

Not only is breast cancer a nasty word to hear it is a painful condition and frightening, it gets even nastier sounding if your doctor has diagnosed you with the disease. Sadly, although scary, women still choose to avoid initiating a self breast examination on them self. Why do women ignore cancer awareness alerts which point out the vital concerns of catching cancer in its early stage when they know breast cancer can be a fatal condition?

There can only be one reason why decisions of denial that they are cancer free are made and that is because they are too scared that they may actually detect a lump in the process. Is it not best to find a lump the size of pea than that of one which has developed greater in size? Not all breast lumps are cancerous, breast abnormalities should be checked out sooner than later. "Later is a death sentence". Some women in their seventies said they don't have much road ahead so why the need for a self breast examination. Hey blue rinse gals it is very important for your grand kids have you stick around longer and what of your happy birthday 100th telegram off the Queen. Breast screening regardless of age saves lives (70 years plus). Dutch research of over 860,000 women voiced breast screening decreased the number of deaths by 30% after the upper age limit was extended. Cancer risks increase with age so they say; medical experts have been at odds over whether the over-70s should be checked. UK plans involve raising the upper age limit for routine screening from 70 to 73 by 2012. The Netherlands extended its programme to cover women up to 75 in 1998.

Researchers are continuously and tirelessly looking for answers, e.g. Is breast cancer a hereditary issue or an actual cancer having a specific associated link? (Like Lung cancer in relation to smoking) Overcome your panic thoughts of resistance in finding a lump and it may well save your life.

If you are afraid of the unknown as to what is involved with breast screening then there is nothing to worry over. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts. The NHS in the United Kingdom breast screen women aged between 50 and 70. A mammogram will be requested if you have breast cancer symptoms, such as a lump. What you can expect when a mammogram is performed is having a radiographer present. He/she will help you to position one breast at a time on a small flat plate, with an X-ray plate under it. Another flat plate will be placed over the breast. Once the machine is activated, the breast is slightly compressed between the two. Compression of the breast makes it easier for the doctor to see things more clearly. A Mammogram in the UK consists of two snapshots: one from above and one from the side. This is a precaution method to ascertain that nothing is missed. Research opinion says taking a 2 view mammogram can increase breast screening cancer detection rate by 25% or more. Simple explained means every 100 cancers picked up with single view mammograms doubles that to 125 with the double view.

Do mammograms cause pain, well uncomfortable is more the word to depict, however this will depend on breast size and pain threshold of the patient. A mammogram will only take a couple of minutes, so any discomfort will not have to endured for long, unlike the pain caused by breast cancer (physical and mental).

Once a mammogram test is complete the doctor will check for any signs of cancer. Results of the mammogram are normally delivered a week or two later, sometimes longer. Developed breast cancers will more times show up clearly on mammograms. However it is not rare for one to go unnoticed because the x-ray showed no sign. Infancy breast cancer may not involve having a lump, patterns yes, which on a mammogram may suggest breast cancer. The medical term calcification means tiny regions of calcium within the breast tissue. Cancer can be detected through the calcium which creates spots and patterns which suggest disease presence. Breast changes are normal but only your doctor is in the position to say these changes are of the non-cancerous pattern type.

Microcalcifications and Early Signs of Breast Cancer

Breast calcifications are calcium deposits inside breast tissue. They emerge as white spots or flecks on a mammogram and are typically so small that you couldn't feel them.

Breast calcifications are widespread in all women and are even more common after menopause. Though breast calcifications are typically noncancerous (benign), particular patterns of calcifications - like tight clusters with irregular shapes - might point to breast cancer.

The two major kinds of breast calcifications are:

- Macrocalcifications. They come out as large white dots or dashes on a mammogram. Macrocalcifications are nearly always noncancerous and need no additional follow-up.

- Microcalcifications. They come out as extremely fine white specks on a mammogram. Microcalcifications are typically noncancerous but could sometimes be a sign of cancer.

Where and How Often Do Calcifications come out?

- macrocalcifications show up in roughly 50 percent of women over 50, and 10 percent of women under 50 years of age

- macrocalcifications are typically not troublesome and won't need a biopsy

- 80 percent of microcalcifications are benign

- microcalcifications could assist identify ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

A microcalcification is an increase of calcium in one spot. They are widespread and most women will have a few on their mammogram at some point in time. The majority of them are benign. A good number of women do worry regarding them, though - maybe since they haven't been given a complete clarification of what they are.

When should you worry? First, don't be frightened if you have microcalcifications since the majority women DO have them at some point. The doctor will take a look to observe if they warrant additional examination.

This typically happens when the microcalcifications are new, clustered firmly together, and comes out when magnified to have unusual forms. Rather than spherical, they look similar to grains of salt with irregular edges. This could be an early sign of breast cancer, most frequently non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS or stage 0 breast cancer).

Microcalcifications couldn't be experienced on clinical exam or your own breast self-exam. They do not harm. This is the value of mammography - it finds them long prior to they could move forward into an actual lump.

Most of the time, suspicious microcalcifications will be biopsied by means of a stereotactic method that enables the doctor to pin down their location and take away a sample consequently it could be examined by a pathologist. The intention of removing tissue by means of this method is not to get rid of all of the microcalcifications but to obtain a representative sampling accordingly a diagnosis could be completed.

Breast Cancer - Post-Treatment Side Effects

So you've finished treatment, your hair is starting to grow back and the fog of chemotherapy is slowly starting to lift - what now? One of the issues all breast cancer survivors must deal with is the long-term side effects that can arise post therapy.

From a physical standpoint, your body has changed. The after effects of surgery can leave you with a stiff shoulder, so exercise is important in terms of regaining a full rage of motion again. You'll probably have to always take a little extra time with it when stretching in the future. Depending on how many lymph nodes you had removed, you may have to contend with lymphedema. Exercise and eating healthily are probably the best ways to deal with the physical side effects of surgery and radiation. Massage can be a good way to help with some of the scaring that may have occurred, limiting your physical motion.

If you had chemotherapy, you will have to contend with some long-term sided effects. Chemo brain is probably the most annoying of these. This is a decrease in the cognitive brain function, which may or may not improve over time. Another issue is fatigue, which will lessen over time. You may have gained some weight, so, again, exercise and diet changes can help you get back to a more comfortable weight. Bone loss is also an issue, especially when women are thrown into early menopause after chemo (yet another side effect). Taking calcium supplements will help with that. A chemotherapy called Adriamycin can cause damage to the heart.

Body image and intimacy are other issues and usually the hardest to talk about. After having surgery and treatments that are very invasive in addition to the feeling of distrust towards your own body for turning on you, it's no wonder that it takes a little time for a woman to feel good about sex again after having breast cancer. It's important to let your partner know how you are feeling if you are having issues of this type so that they don't take it personally and can give you the space you need to recover. Talking to a professional about any issues you may be having can help immensely during this time.

For younger breast cancer survivors, pregnancy is sometimes an issue if they had not yet had children. Survivors can struggle with the decision to have children after their diagnosis. On one hand, some women feel that they should not bring a child into the world if they are not completely certain they will be around to raise them. On the other hand, some feel that they can at least carry on their family heritage and give the child a few years of love and care in the event that the cancer comes back. Also, chemotherapy can cause you to lose your fertility, so if you think you may want to have children using a donor egg or in vitro fertilization, you will need to consider the risks associated with hormones that will be used to regulate the pregnancy.

Recovering from cancer can take time, but being aware of these potential long-term issues and being proactive with them can help make the recovery easier.

Help the People You Love Survive Breast Cancer

Normally, I write about how self defense and combat martial arts training can prevent death and injury. Today, though, in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a cancer survivor myself, I am writing about another kind of prevention. By the end of the year over 40,000 women will die from breast cancer in the United States alone. Let that sink in for a minute. And while the devastating effects of breast cancer to the women in our lives are well documented, you should know that while it's less common, men can also contract breast cancer. The survival rate for those stricken with breast cancer has steadily increased over the years, due largely to increased awareness. We all have to do what we can to continue this trend and protect the ones we love from this deadly killer.

As with your self defense training, you have to remain vigilant at all times and take action before you're attacked. Experts say that women should start getting mammograms yearly at the age of 40; this is a smart step, but in itself is not enough. Women and men should do self-exams regularly at home, and see a doctor right away if they find anything unusual. After all, it's better to hear your doctor say you have a cyst a week from now than to hear a year from now that you have a tumor. Encourage your partner and / or loved ones to visit the doctor. Talk about these issues to understand how your partner feels - the toughest and strongest thing you can do is step up and face your fears together.

Also, not all preventative steps have to be medical; there are many lifestyle changes people can make to decrease their odds of getting breast cancer. Some easy examples: Limit yourself to one drink a day. Maintain a healthy weight - work out together and keep active. Decrease your fat intake, which can help reduce the risk of not just breast cancer but also diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. If you and your loved ones work on being healthy together, you'll be better off in general and you may be fortunate enough to avoid cancer all together.

Sadly, sometimes cancer appears regardless of what actions you take, and that could mean dealing with the pain and discomfort of radiation and other treatments. Look outside your immediate circle; if you have a friend who is fighting cancer herself or if you know people helping their own loved ones in the fight, let them know they have a shoulder to lean on in you. Don't be afraid to act - you can't know how much even the smallest gesture can mean to someone in a fight for her life.

You would never back down in combat, and you live without fear - so don't back down when it comes to the health of the people you love. In self defense you remain vigilant and strike first; you should also apply these principles to dealing with a deadly disease like cancer. Guys, be there for your wife, girlfriend, mother, sister, aunt, or friend when she needs you.

Ladies, help the men in your life be strong when they need to be. Be smart and make the healthy changes you need to make together, and don't ever let each other feel alone. Don't let the people you love face a killer alone.

Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Tote Bags

You may or may not know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This gives businesses a great opportunity to promote their own business while raising awareness for a good cause. Pink tote bags are among the most popular resources for businesses to promote awareness.

Non-profit organizations can also benefit by getting exposure by handing out promotional material. Giveaways like tote bags are inexpensive and reusable, so people will be reminded of the printed message often. Every time they use the bags, they will see the imprinted message.

There are a few ways that businesses can benefit from promoting awareness. Companies can imprint their own logo as well as an awareness message on the tote bags. Then, the bags can be resold at their retail location, giving a percentage of the sale to breast cancer research or any other local foundations.

Customers will love the opportunity to purchase something they will actually use knowing that part of their purchase will be donated to helping the cause of breast cancer awareness. Businesses will also benefit because their logo will be printed on the side of the bag. These pink tote bags are reusable, and people will see the imprinted logo for years to come. Customers will also love to patronize a business that is supporting a great cause like this one.

Awareness of breast cancer is something that needs to be promoted. When it is not promoted, it is sadly ignored. Cancer is an ugly word, but it can be erased when awareness is raised, especially during the month of October.

The Historic Pink Ribbon

Cancer is spreading among women at a fast rate. First lung cancer, and now breast cancer has proven to be a major cause of this tragic increase in the rate of death among women. Even though the figures of new cases of breast cancer are relatively lower since 2009 than the previous years, breast cancer advocates have not yet taken to resting. They are still trying to find more ways to bring that figure further down. They have created several ways of spreading awareness about this cancer and for fundraising too. They are willing to help in any way they can, they're supporting many researches on the topic which might help erase the vicious disease from the face of Earth. And these supporters have figured that one way to support effectively is through the pink ribbon merchandise.

Over a million people globally will probably be targeted by this disease, and even more people will stand to support the cause. These warriors, and there battalions who work against breast cancer will go on working, trying to change the world by raising awareness using the pink ribbon merchandise and of course.

The Pink Ribbon bracelets: These bracelets initially gained popularity in the public in early 1990s. When the Self magazine planned its second annual breast cancer awareness month issue. That was when they partnered with Estee Lauder to create the looped pink ribbon. An awareness campaign was started, these ribbons were then distributed at makeup counters around the country, along with the distribution of the magazine. Thus, theses ribbons became the first symbol in 1980 in the united fight against breast cancer through the awareness campaign organized by The Susan B. Kormen Breast Cancer Foundation. They arranged several events to promote these ribbons. Since then, the pink ribbon has been known as the symbolic product for the contribution towards the cure of breast cancer.

This ribbon included provocative information about breast cancer and steps that one should take to support the war against it. It also gave instructions on self-examination and information on how to influence Washington to increase funds for research on the topic. As for why the pink color was chosen? Well, that was because the color holds significant familiarity and similarity with femininity. And it is often strongly associated with anything feminine.

Variety of Pink ribbon products: As these ribbons gained popularity, people thought up of several more items featuring the pink ribbon, this was to promote awareness among common population. Now we have a wide variety of products, ranging from pink ribbon bracelets to pins, and clothing too. Even mugs and key chains have caught on now. But the item that gained the most popularity was the pink ribbon bracelet. As it conveys the message of awareness in the form of a delicately design and very wearable bracelet.

Feature: In future, It could be like almost anything you want. It could even be of different materials. If you want a pearl bracelet, you could get a pearl pink ribbon bracelet. No matter what your style, you're sure to like one among the vast field of choice. And furthermore, by wearing the bracelet, you will be promoting the universal message of cancer awareness.

These bracelets mean more than a trendy fashion accessory. They are actually supposed to raise the understanding of people in the fields of research, and finding a cure. It is a statement of concern for those who are suffering the cancer. With every reason, it becomes more inspirational and meaningful. So what we can do to promote it is, buy it, wear it, and encourage others to do the same. This fight is universal, and no one can shy from it, since no woman is safe from breast cancer.

What Causes Breast Cancer?

Recent breast cancer statistics state that one in eight women is at risk to develop breast cancer in their lifetime and that women over fifty have the greatest risk for developing breast cancer. Breast cancer can be detected via mammograms or self-diagnosis. Self-diagnosis is no replacement for a doctor.

Pinpointing the exact cause of breast cancer remains very difficult, as each person's cancer may be brought on by totally different causes. In general, cancer is caused by a free radicals, also known as deformed cells, which attach to good cells. There is also a link to high estrogen levels. High estrogen levels may be caused by hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, and high levels of preservatives found in herbicides and pesticides.

We can classify the causes listed above as generally beyond our control. However, there are other things that can put one at risk for breast cancer that are within our control. These include:

- Excessive alcohol intake.

- A diet high in fat.

- Pregnancy after 30.

- Oral contraceptive use.

Unfortunately, our society teaches us that most things can be fixed with a pill. However, to truly help prevent cancer, you can do some or all of the following: Exercise regularly. This could be as simple as a 30 minute walk each day. Eat a diet high in fiber and vegetables and low in fat. Eat fruit. Always ensure you get the proper amount of rest specific to you. You may need 7 hours of sleep, you may need more or less. Listen to your body as it will tell you. Make sure you self-diagnose and stick to a schedule. You may also want to consider progesterone cream as well. What this does is essentially regulate your body's hormones so that the estrogen level does not get too high. Doing these things will go a long way to helping prevent breast cancer and lowering your risk of developing it.

Haven't You Got Your Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet Yet?

By now you should be familiar with the yellow 'LiveStrong' rubber cancer awareness bracelets. They were popularized by seven-time Tour de France cycling champion and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. The money from their proceeds goes for cancer research.

If he has planning to pitchfork cancer awareness into society's consciousness, Lance Armstrong has done a really good job. His rubber bracelets are ubiquitous today, an ever present awareness tool for cancer, and a fund-raising tool for cancer research.

Among cancer awareness bracelets, next to Armstrong's rubber wristbands come the breast cancer awareness bracelets. However, unlike the 'LiveStrong' rubber band bracelets, these breast cancer awareness bracelets come in different colors. The most popular color for breast cancer awareness bracelets is pink.

But why pink? There is a story behind it: Charlotte Haley, a 68-year-old woman, began making and distributing peach ribbons in the 1990s with cards that read: "The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon." Haley's daughter, sister and grandmother had breast cancer. Self magazine wanted to use Haley's ribbon but she refused saying they were too commercial. The magazine came up with another color then -- pink. Focus groups say pink is 'soothing, comforting and healing.' Soon the pink ribbon became the worldwide symbol for breast cancer, and Charlotte Haley's peach ribbon was history.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. says that more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in America in 2005. Of these 43,300 will die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year.

However, the breast cancer awareness bracelets can come in all colors, a rainbow of them, depending on the organization or charity selling them. These bracelets usually have some message, such as 'Support Breast Cancer Research And Education' stamped on them.

Well, the breast cancer awareness bracelets needn't be made of rubber or silicone either. The bracelets can be made of pearl, or cats eye, or metal, or any other suitable material. There are even stainless steel breast cancer awareness bracelets! The difference between them is, of course, the price. The rubber ones would sell for around $1 a piece. The metal ones would sell higher. Some pearl breast cancer awareness bracelets sell for around $30 a piece. Such bracelets serve two purposes -- they are jewelry and also spread the message of charity and breast cancer research.

The advantage with rubber breast cancer awareness bracelets, apart from the price, is that they are infinitely customizable. Yes, you can order them in any color and with any message stamped on them. You needn't take them off while washing or playing -- they are all-weather bracelets. And you don't have to worry about losing them, unlike the pearl or cats eye ones.

The rubber breast cancer awareness bracelets can be ordered in bulk or bought in packets of a dozen or so from many Web sites.

Support Breast Cancer Research With Pink Products

Breast cancer mainly affects women. It is also one of the leading causes of female mortality. It forms in the tissues of the breast, either in the ducts. The pink ribbon is the internationally recognized symbol for breast cancer awareness. One of the most important things that a survivor of this disease can receive is support. Support can be from family members, friends or from other survivors. Support groups usually provide empathy, empowerment and compassion for survivors.

Companies support breast cancer awareness and research by putting pink ribbons or coloring their merchandise pink. They are then supposed to give a certain percentage of what they make in sales to support this noble cause. Companies also have days when employees dress in pink clothes or accessories in support of this cause. In addition, they make contributions which are donated to organizations that support the cause. Concerns are however arising that companies are now using the pink ribbon as a marketing gimmick. They have been accused of using the ribbons to attract sales from sympathizers of breast cancer and then failing to make donations to the relevant organizations. However, with accountability and transparency, this can become a thing of the past.

Another problem associated with the pink ribbon campaign is that, a lot of money is being spent on the campaigns themselves than is being raised for research or treatment. This means that, the campaign defeats the purpose for which it was intended. In addition, some of the companies that are being used to promote these campaigns are also raising eyebrows. For example, the cosmetic companies which use cancer causing substances in making some of their products. It appears that these companies are using these campaigns as a cover up to their business dealings.

Concerns are also being raised that the abuse of the pink ribbon campaign will result in survivors not getting the support they deserve. This is because, as companies continue profiting from the disease, little ends up being done in terms of treatment and research. Issues such as the rising cost of treatment and the plight of survivors are left unattended. In addition, people seem to have forgotten what the campaign is all about and are more focused on the things that they are able to buy. Sadly, it is now becoming apparent that the breast cancer campaign could fade into obscurity like the HIV/AIDS campaigns. These were very popular in the nineties after the AIDS pandemic rocked the world.

Breast Cancer Favors - Purchased and Homemade

Giving breast cancer favors, whether as a personal celebration (weddings, birthdays, etc.) or at events (awareness events and fundraisers) conveys a thoughtful, meaningful and personal message. The options for breast cancer favors are wide, whether purchased or homemade.

Discover How Breast Cancer Awareness Can Benefit You

You have undoubted run across many of the breast cancer awareness days and sessions that appear around the country sporadically. These are usually put on by a local group, a church, or sponsored by the American Cancer Society to promote breast cancer awareness in the community.

You might be wondering why your breast cancer awareness level should be raised and what benefit that represents for you, but all you need to do is look at the statistics about the reported cases of breast cancer. The reported cases of breast cancer has been rising steadily year after year, and for the coming year, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be more than 200,000 diagnosed cases. Even scarier is that they also estimate that more than 40,000 of those cases of breast cancer will die from it.

Here is an even scarier fact for you -- did you know that breast cancer is not limited to women? Yes it is true. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 1600 cases of breast cancer in MEN this year, and that about 400 of them will die. So are you starting to see where breast cancer awareness is starting to be important to you and your health? With statistics like this, it is no wonder that they want to promote breast cancer awareness as much as possible.

Many people do not take this disease seriously, even despite these statistics. Although it is difficult to believe, there are many people who have not had a checkup or medical exam in the past 4, 5, or 10 years or more. How can you possibly take your health seriously if you do not have regular checkups and exams from your doctor or medical professional? One way is of course to raise your breast cancer awareness level since that is a disease where there is currently not a known cure.

Your best option for fighting breast cancer is to get early detection and early diagnosis. When breast cancer is detected early, your chances of being able to cope with it, to fight it, and via treatments like chemo, there are many documented cases of people who have beat it. But if it had not been detected and diagnosed early, those would almost certainly be different stories with radically different outcomes. What about those people who have not had a medical examination in the past 4 or 5 years? If they have developed breast cancer in that timeframe, it will certainly not be considered an early diagnosis and could even mean another fatality from breast cancer.

You need to become knowledgeable about the typical symptoms of breast cancer, and if you detect any of those symptoms at home, you should schedule a checkup with your doctor as soon as possible. For women of ages 18 to about 40, you should plan to schedule a checkup with your doctor once about every 2-3 years. For women over 40, that checkup should be not less than annually. Although breast cancer has not conclusively been determined to be hereditary, you might want to consider having checkups even more often is there is a history of cancer in your family tree. Keeping these statistics in mind, your level of breast cancer awareness should be raised where these regular checkups should be at the forefront of your mind.

Raise your breast cancer awareness levels and get those checkups. Be aware of the symptoms and if you see any of them, be sure to get an exam soon. Remember, the best chances for beating breast cancer are early detection and early diagnosis.

Breast Cancer Surgery Options

Each October we are bombarded with breast cancer awareness campaigns, resulting in significant strides in earlier breast cancer detection. However, studies have shown that women facing breast cancer surgery are not always made aware of all their options. There has been little focus on awareness of surgical options and the breast reconstruction process. This might seem improbable, but I'm living proof that there is a gap in knowledge about surgical options.

When women are panicking from a breast cancer diagnosis, most won't spend time researching options. Since surgical techniques vary by hospital, it becomes more critical for proactive education. Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day) was created to address the educational gap. On Wednesday October 15, 2014 the third annual BRA Day will take place.

In regards to surgical options, lumpectomy is the least invasive option and it's a very common technique. In this technique, only the tumor is removed and as much remaining breast tissue as possible is left intact. However, depending on the tumor size and location, removal of the cancer might leave a noticeably deformed breast.

If more extensive surgery is required, the entire breast is removed, known as mastectomy. In this case, there then becomes a choice of whether the patient wants to remain without a breast or wants a new one to be created. Building a new breast is known as reconstruction and is performed by a Plastic Surgeon working in conjunction with the Breast Surgeon, who extracts the cancer. The procedures might be able to be completed during the same surgery or reconstruction may require an additional surgery later.

In the event that the patient chooses reconstruction after her mastectomy she may have multiple options in an ever-evolving process, thanks to our donation dollars and continued medical research.

The traditional reconstruction method entailed placing an expander under the skin during the mastectomy surgery. The expander is essentially an empty balloon. After the patient has recuperated from her surgery, the doctor will gradually inflate the balloon over several sessions, until the skin has been stretched out to the desired size, at which time the expander will be exchanged with an implant or other body tissue during a second surgery. A nipple can be added later, using flesh or a 3-D illusion tattoo, along with a tattooed areola, if desired. It can be a lengthy process. Even with the extended time and effort required, this option is still worthwhile for many women.

Further evolution of reconstructive surgery led to the "skin-sparing" mastectomy. In this case, the nipple and areola are removed, but the remaining skin is left intact. The internal breast tissue is removed and the cavity is filled with body tissue from another area or an implant or an inflated expander during the initial surgery. The patient would have a breast immediately, however, without a nipple or areola - both of which can be added later, if desired. If an expander is used, it will have to be swapped out with an implant or other body tissue later.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy, NSM, is currently the most technically advanced reconstruction option. In this case, the entire outer shell of the breast is left intact and only the internal breast tissue is removed. The remaining void is filled directly with body tissue or an implant or an inflated expander during the initial surgery. The result is similar to the skin-sparing mastectomy, but it's a more aesthetically pleasing outcome as the original nipple and areola are left intact.

All surgery options won't be offered at every hospital. In addition, not everyone is eligible for every surgical option. However, understanding the options that exist will allow a woman to make the most informed surgical choice should the need ever arise.

I created a Breast Cancer Surgery Options video that shows examples of these options and is certain to leave a lasting impression. Spending eleven minutes to become educated might make a huge difference for someone you love. Please watch and share. http://youtu.be/dhRnZVPodxY

Increasing Awareness With A Breast Cancer Bracelet

Breast cancer continues to affect millions of people worldwide - plunging newly diagnosed sufferers and their families into the bewildering world of treatment plans and statistics on a daily basis.

This year alone, over one-million people worldwide will be unwillingly inducted into this club of warriors. And strong in numbers, these sufferers and their families will continue to affect change in the landscape of awareness and treatment; part of the way in which they raise awareness is through the wearing of merchandise, including the breast cancer bracelet.

The breast cancer bracelet can attribute its beginnings to the awareness campaign, where the pink ribbon first became the symbol in the united fight. The Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - which began in the early 1980s as a way to funnel comprehensive information to victims and raise money for research - began using the pink ribbon in the early years of its Race for the Cure, the annual run/walk fundraising event that is the signature event of this foundation.

The early beginnings of the pink ribbon were brought to the forefront as Self magazine planned their second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue in the early 1990s. In this effort, the magazine partnered with Estee Lauder to create the looped pink ribbon we have now come to recognize; over a million of which were distributed at makeup counters around the country to coincide with the distribution of the magazine. The ribbon included instructions on self examination and information on how to petition Washington to increase funds for research. The color pink was chosen because of its strong association with femininity.

With the growing popularity of the pink ribbon, came the further development of other pink items to signify awareness. The items have since come fast and furious - from t-shirts and pins, to umbrellas and mugs. The breast cancer bracelet, especially, has achieved enormous popularity as the message of awareness is encapsulated in a beautifully designed - and very wearable - bracelet.

The bracelet is just like any other bracelet that you would think nothing of buying and wearing; but you have the added benefit of knowing that in wearing the bracelet you are promoting awareness and, in so doing, are part of a community that is saving lives.

The bracelet comes in a variety of styles and prices - everything from pearls and crystal to silver and gold. No matter what your style or taste in jewelry, there will surely be a bracelet that draws your attention and furthers the message of awareness. In today's online world especially, there is a growing number of websites dedicated to the sale of pink awareness merchandise.

This awareness encompasses many different things when it comes to the battle against breast cancer. Raising awareness means increasing people's understanding of research, prevention, detection, and treatment. But more importantly, raising awareness - through the wearing of insignia such as the bracelet - means alerting those who are affected to a larger community; a community of enormous support and infinite understanding.
